Roald Dahl's Birthplace
Villa Marie on Fairwater Road, now named Ty Gwyn (White House, above), was built by Dahl's father Harald. Roald was born there in 1916 and the following year, the family moved to a country house in Radyr. After Harald died in 1920, his widow and Roald went to live in Cumberland Lodge, now part of Howells' School:
Roald attended the Cathedral School, then
based at Green Court on the Cathedral Green
Another building that left a lasting impression him was Mrs Pratchett's sweetshop at No.11 High Street:
The Cathedral Green
The War Memorial
on The Green is in the form of a statue showing a female
‘Llandaff’ remembering her two sons. The figure on the
left represents the young men from the Cathedral School who
died (not just from Llandaff) and the figure on the right
represents all the young men from the parish who lost their
lives. The class difference between the two figures is
clearly, and touchingly, drawn, as they are bound together
in death. It
was created by Sir William Goscombe John
whose work is displayed throughout the village, on The Green
and at the Cathedral.
